Prep Time showcases the laid back, lyrical style of M.i as he tells story after story over smooth beats guided by a plethora of musical instruments. Although the Jack Johnson name may have originally turned many people onto his first project, M.i does a wonderful job proving his talent on Prep Time as he displays his growth not only as an MC, but as a complete artist and producer.

This excellent mixtape has a similar appeal because of the choice of instruments used and the Austin,TX native’s content. Until I Get On and Take a Loss the two tracks which have come out in the past month continue to shine for me, but new ones are also catching my ear.

The great part about M.i.’s music is that it’s universal.  Anyone can enjoy siting down and listen to his material.  It’s music like his that is truly hard to find today when everyone is putting out the same sounds and messages.

A lot of people have the misconception that hip hop has to be “hood” or “gangster.” To me, hip hop is much more diverse than that. M.i. steps way away from the stereotypical rapper and brings us “The Jack Johnson Sessions (2010).” A great collection of music that was written, produced, recorded, and mixed by M.i. himself.
